Thousand Islands Divers Alliance Expands Volunteer Efforts Ahead of 2026 Season with Community Support

Alexandria Bay, NY — April 2, 2026 — The Thousand Islands Divers Alliance (TIDA), a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and protecting the St. Lawrence River, is preparing for the 2026 dive season with expanded volunteer recruitment, safety training, and environmental initiatives across the Thousand Islands region.

TIDA has received support from the Northern New York Community Foundation, helping to expand volunteer recruitment and safety training efforts for the upcoming season.  In addition, Stewart’s Shops, with a location in Clayton, has contributed to support TIDA’s diver safety awareness initiative.

The organization is a volunteer-driven group of divers working to remove underwater debris, improve safe public access to dive sites, and help preserve historic shipwrecks in the St. Lawrence River. As the season approaches, TIDA is actively organizing divers and preparing for a series of in-water cleanup and stewardship operations beginning in late May.

“This work is all driven by volunteers,” said Todd D. Keister, President and CEO of TIDA. “With growing community support, we’re able to expand our efforts and make a greater impact in protecting the river and improving safety at key sites.”

​

In addition to in-water cleanup efforts, TIDA is advancing several local initiatives, including improvements to shoreline access at the Islander dive site in Alexandria Bay, installation of diver safety awareness signage at public access points, and ongoing environmental monitoring at established dive locations.

​

Working in collaboration with the Village of Alexandria Bay and other community partners, TIDA aims to enhance both environmental stewardship and safe recreational use of the river.

​

“The St. Lawrence River is one of the most unique freshwater environments in the country,” Keister added. “Our goal is to help keep it clean, safe, and accessible for both residents and visitors.”
